Methodology

Our Review Process

At hikespeak.com, our goal is to provide the most accurate, reliable, and user-friendly outdoor information available. Every trail guide and campground review is the result of a meticulous, first-hand process. This is our commitment to you.

Hiking Trail Methodology

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable hike, we go the extra mile to verify every detail.

  • Every Trail is Hiked Personally: Every trail on this website has been personally hiked, photographed, and documented by the author. With very few exceptions, that author is also the website’s founder, Seth Smigelski. We believe there is no substitute for first-hand experience.
  • Accurate, “No-Guesswork” Directions: Finding the trailhead can be a journey of its own… That’s why hikespeak provide precise trailhead coordinates, clear driving directions, and detailed parking information to get you to the start of your hike without frustration.
  • Comprehensive Trail Data: Before you even leave the house, you’ll know the essential details. Every guide includes carefully recorded information on:
    • Total distance and elevation change
    • Trail type (loop, out-and-back, etc.)
    • Approximate hiking time
    • Fees, permits, or necessary reservations
    • Rules for dogs and mountain bikes
    • Seasonal considerations (like the best time to see waterfalls or wildflowers)
  • Original Visuals & GPS Mapping: We personally photograph every trail and record a GPS track during the hike. This data is used to create our custom maps and elevation profiles, with key junctions and landmarks highlighted so you can follow along with confidence. All photos are authentic and taken on-site.

Campground Review Methodology

A great camping trip starts with finding the right spot. Our campground reviews are designed to familiarize you with the campground before you book.

  • On-Site Visits and Overnight Stays: We personally visit and photograph every campground we review. Whenever possible, this includes an overnight stay to get the full experience.
  • Details That Matter: We document the key information campers need, including site types (tent, RV, etc.), available amenities (restrooms, water, fire pits), reservation processes, fees, campground layout, surrounding attractions, and the overall atmosphere of the location.
  • Authentic Campground Photos: Our reviews feature original photos of the actual campsites and facilities, so you can see what to expect when you arrive.
