The hike begins from Paradise, a perfectly named destination on the southern slope of Mount Rainier. Loop up to Panorama Point, a stunning viewpoint that is about as close to the summit of Rainier as you can get without an ice ax. The trail passes snowfields, streams, waterfalls, and fields of alpine flowers. On a clear day, the views along this loop are nothing short of incredible. The entire trail is 5.5 miles long with 1,625 feet of elevation gain. That distance can be trimmed to 4.5 miles by using the Golden Gate Trail shortcut. There are several trails exploring the Paradise area that connect to Skyline Trail allowing for a variety extensions.

Does it get any better than Paradise? Hike up Skyline Trail to find the answer – yes! The trail is paved for the first half mile, but don’t be dissuaded; it doesn’t last. There are several junctions along the way, but Skyline Trail is always well marked. Head straight through two junctions about 1/4 of a mile from the start. The steep trail then gains 200 feet over the next 1/4 mile to a junction with Dearhead Creek Trail. The enticing views of Mount Rainier and Nisqually Glacier on the early portions of this hike are just a taste of things to come.

Mount Rainier above Skyline Trail

Stay to the right through the junction with Dearhead Creek Trail, then make a left at the next junction with Alta Vista Trail, 0.6 miles from the start. Leave the pavement behind as you hike straight toward Mount Rainier. Cherish the next 1.25 miles, which climb 850 feet to Panorama Point. The trail climbs a rocky ridge overlooking Nisqually Glacier.

Nisqually Glacier and Mount Rainier

Stop and listen to the crackling sound of the moving ice. On a warm day, you may spot a waterfall flowing out of the glacier, down a cliff, and back into the glacier – all on the slopes of Mount Rainier. The staggering views continue as you turn up a switchback and climb to Panorama Point. The trail may cross several snowfields, which cover this wild landscape for much of the year.

Panorama Point doesn’t just have a big view, it has an enormous view, looking south over Paradise toward the Tatoosh Range. Beyond these sawtooth mountains are two of the other great volcanoes in the Cascade Mountains, Mount Adams and Mount Saint Helens.

The Tatoosh Range and Mount Adams

From Panorama Point, Lower Skyline Trail drops off a steep snow shelf on a potentially dangerous path that cuts close to half a mile off the hike. If the snow level is high and you aren’t wearing crampons, continue on Upper Skyline Trail, which gains an additional 300 feet, climbing further up the rocky slope toward Mount Rainier. Eventually, the trail turns downhill, and after just over 3/4 of a mile, reunites with the lower route.

Skyline Trail loops back down the mountain

Hike another half mile through a pristine mountain landscape covered with streams and wildflowers to a junction with Golden Gate Trail. Straight ahead, Skyline Trail descends another two miles to Myrtle Falls, passing Sluiskin Falls along the way. To the right, Golden Gate Trail is more direct, descending just a mile to a reunion with Skyline Trail at Myrtle Falls. There is no bad trail through Paradise. Just decide how much time you have and make your way down to the falls.

Skyline Trail crosses a footbridge above Myrtle Falls to reach a spur trail that descends to a closer look at the waterfall. Myrtle Falls is a postcard waiting to happen, a beautiful silken waterfall flowing from the snowfields on Mount Rainier – simply stunning.

Myrtle Falls

The pavement resume at Myrtle Falls, which means the great hike is coming to an end. It is less than half a mile back to the trailhead next to the Paradise Inn. Skyline Trail could easily be called Mount Rainier’s must-do hike. It is an incredible journey through a rugged and beautiful world. There is a national park entrance fee to reach Paradise, but no permit is required to hike Skyline Trail.

To get to the trailhead: From the the west, from the 5 Freeway in Tacoma, take exit 127 onto Route 512 east and drive 2 miles to Route 7 South. Turn right and drive 65 miles, passing through the town of Ashford and into Mount Rainier National Park. Pass Narada Falls and turn left on Paradise Road, concluding the trip with two miles of switchbacks up the Paradise. From the east side of the park, take Route 123 to Stevens Canyon Road (near Ohanapecosh) and drive west for 19 miles to Paradise Road. Turn right and drive two miles of switchbacks up to the parking area at Paradise. The trail is located between the visitor center and the inn.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
Before returning back down the trail, relax beneath the falls, which feels worlds away from the city life below. If you live in LA and enjoy waterfalls, you owe it to yourself to visit this two-tier 200 footer. The early part of the year is the best time to visit, when the falls are at their fullest. Cove Big Sur Hike" />

Jade Cove and Plaskett Rock Point are just south of Plaskett Creek Campground on the west side of Highway One. Visited together, they form a 1.5-mile hike.

There are two trailheads for this hike, both are unmarked a somewhat difficult to spot. From Plaskett Creek Campground drive a quarter mile south and scan the west side of the road for the Plaskett Rock Point trailhead. A second trail, another quarter mile to the south, leads straight to Jade Cove. A scenic path along the coastal bluff connects these parallel tracks.

Walking along the bluff

The upper trail splits not far from the road. The main track continues to Plaskett Rock Point, while a smaller path breaks off to the left and cuts across the grassland toward the top of Jade Cove, half a mile from the start. The lower trail, takes a direct line from Highway One, intersects the bluff trail, and descends the steep 0.1 mile path to Jade Cove.

The cove does not yield much in the way of views, and is more popular with rock enthusiasts pursuing the jade found along the coast (which is why you will see “excavating prohibited” signs in this area).

The trail down to Jade Cove

The trail above the cove meanders north along the bluff through coastal grasses spotted with wildflowers. Below barking elephant seals can be heard over the sound of waves crashing on the rocky shore. Halfway to the end of Plaskett Rock Point, the trail becomes overgrown and less easy going, so you may turn around before reaching the end.

Plaskett Rock just off the coast

Excluding the steep track down to the cove (which requires the use of a rope at the bottom) the hike on the bluffs over Jade Cove is soft and level. Park at either trailhead and explore the area. This is a good family hike for those staying at the nearby Plaskett Creek Campground. Just north of Plaskett Rock Point is Sand Dollar Beach which can be reached via a short trail that starts just north of the campground.

To get to the trailhead: From Ragged Point Inn, drive 15 miles north (or 35 miles from Cambria) and park on the west side of Highway One. From the north drive 22.3 south from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (home of McWay Falls), or 30.4 miles south of Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur. Plaskett Creek Campground is just north of the trailheads and has several signs along the road.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

This easy one-mile round-trip hike leaves from the east side of Buckeye Flats Campground near site 28. The trail follows the north side of the Kaweah River along a flat track before descending to a wooden bridge. Cross the river here above a wide and mesmerizing section of the river. Continue straight ahead to meet up with the tamer Paradise Creek. The trail turns left and heads up the creek past a series of pools and cascades that offer tranquility on a hot day.

Paradise Creek

The waters of the Kaweah River are active and too violent for any relaxed swimming, but the Paradise Creek tributary is calm and perfect for a soothing dip. Plenty of enjoyment can be found in the pools along Paradise Creek. There are wildflowers along the creek and this is a fun area to explore and enjoy.

For hikers whose goal is not just to relax in paradise, the trail continues up the canyon faintly for another two miles before fizzling out.

Poppies along Paradise Creek

The catch: There is no day parking at the trailhead. Therefore, those not camping at Buckeye Flats, will have hike in from Hospital Rock, adding 1.2 miles to the round-trip distance. <!--

class="postbanner" src="http://www.hikespeak.com/img/Sequoia/Marble/Marble_Banner.jpg" alt="Marble Falls hiking trail Sequoia National Park waterfall hike" />

The Marble Falls Trail starts from Potwisha Campground in the foothills region of Sequoia National Park, and makes for a perfect spring hike. The 8-mile round-trip trail takes a flower-lined path up a mountain canyon to a powerful falls. In April and May, much of the trail can be lined with flowers, giving hikers plenty to look at on the way to Marble Falls.

The trail starts near Potwisha’s campsite 14. For those who are not staying at the campground, there are a couple parking spots at the trailhead. If those are full, park in the large lot across the road from the campground.

The trail commences up a service road past a sign for Marble Falls. The Marble Fork of the Kaweah River can be seen and heard through the trees to the left. After a short distance, a posted arrow points up a single-track to the left. Turn up this new trail and stay on it for the rest of the hike, as it switches up the canyon wall and heads north toward the falls.

Wildflowers along the trail

The trail continues steadily uphill, weaving through a painter’s pallet of wildflowers. While it remains several hundred feet above the river, the rushing water will stay within earshot. The trail passes through chaparral, along rock faces, and through groves of bays. It is a sincere four miles to the falls. As the elevation increases, the vegetation becomes more alpine. After 2.5 miles, a prominent outcropping boasts a wide view up the canyon and at the raging creek below. From here, the trail continues to climb before finally leveling out near the falls.

Looking down the canyon

Marble Falls tumbles about seventy feet into a large pool. The river is wide and powerful and the thundering water echoes off the sheer canyon walls. The trail passes the falls and ends on a slab of white marble. Pause on the marble and take in the cacophony of the rushing torrents. If interested, continue up along the river a bit further to be treated to another waterfall that tumbles into a lively pool. There is faint trail to the upper falls and a bit of easy scrambling is required. This falls is shorter, but a more direct view is available, and it is no less picturesque.

Upper Marble Falls

The other good news is, the hike back is mostly all downhill. In the spring, when the temperatures in the foothills are accommodating and the river is flowing strong from the snow melt, this hike deserves to be on every itinerary.

To get to the trailhead: From Southern California, take the 5 North to the 99 North. After 96 miles, take the 198 East toward Visalia. The 198 leads right to the park, where it becomes the Generals Highway. An entrance fee is charged to access the park. Four miles into the park, cross over the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River and Potwisha Campground is on the left. There is parking across from the campground for those not staying at Potwisha.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

A 6.3-mile long fire road runs along the ridge, accompanied by a single-track trail that diverges from the road to explore more of Sullivan Ridge. A prominent lone-standing Live Oak along the road makes a natural turnaround point and a 7.5 to 8.3 mile round trip hike (depending on your course).

A gate operated by Josepho Boy Scout Camp controls traffic along Sullivan Fire Road. Only permitted vehicles may pass the gate, so traffic is light. For hikers, find parking at the top of Capri Drive in the Pacific Palisades and begin walking up Sullivan Fire Road past a few houses. After 0.4 miles, cross the gate and have a look out over Rustic Canyon toward Santa Monica Bay.

Looking east over sunflowers toward Century City and downtown Los Angeles

A quarter mile past the gate, a path to right leads up to the trail running across the top of the ridge. This narrow trail offers a great perspective to the east across Sullivan Canyon toward downtown Los Angeles. The trail rejoins the still-paved fire road one mile later, shaving 0.4 miles from the distance on the fire road, and adding a few fun ups and downs.

What the singe-track bypasses is a crumbling stone wall and iron gate at the entrance of what was once Murphy Ranch, a compound run by Nazi sympathizers in the 1930s. The ranch was raided and shut down shortly after Pearl Harbor, but ruins of the ranch remain and this bizarre piece of LA history can be visited below the fire road in Rustic Canyon.

The gate to Murphy Ranch

From the spot where the ridge trail rejoins the fire road, it is 0.7 miles to the entrance to Camp Josepho. The boy scout camp takes its name from Anatol Josepho, inverter of the photo booth and friend of Will Rogers. Beyond the camp entrance, the unpaved fire road continues, now closed to vehicle traffic (and dog traffic), and the single-track trail resumes its exploration of the top of the ridge. The trail climbs high above the fire road to offer the finest views of the hike. Indeed, these are spectacular views of the Santa Monica Mountains.

A mountain biker on Sullivan Ridge

After just over a mile, the trail rejoins the fire road. Continue a third of a mile across a saddle in the ridge to the bold Coastal Live Oak standing along the road. This is one of the only sources of shade, so stop and catch your breath. The landmark tree makes a natural turn-around point for hikers, and the landscape ahead remains fairly similar. To the tree and back is 7.5 to 8.3 miles.

Looking back on the prominent tree

For those continuing on, not far past the tree the ridge trail breaks off again to climb another crest in the ridge. The two paths rejoin ahead of a junction with the fire road ascending from Sullivan Canyon (1.5 miles beyond the tree). Sullivan Ridge Fire Road continues for another 0.6 mile until it comes to a T at unpaved Mulholland Drive. For those who have made it this far, San Vicente Mountain is one mile to the right (a 13.5 to 14.3 round trip hike).

Sullivan Ridge is very popular with mountain bikers, but hikers will enjoy the ridge’s beautiful vistas as well. Like the nearby Westridge hike, there are two paths that you can go down. This being an out and back hike, feel free to explore them both. Dogs are allowed on leash along the paved road as far as the entrance to Camp Josepho, but not on the single track or dirt fire road beyond. No fee or permit is required, so get out and enjoy.

Lupines above Sullivan Canyon

To get to the trailhead: From Sunset Boulevard, 3 miles west of the 405, turn north at the light onto Capri Drive. After 1/3 mile continue through the traffic circle, remaining on Capri Drive for another 1/3 mile until it comes to and end at Casale Road. Sullivan Ridge Fire road begins to the left. Find street parking to the right or on an adjacent road.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--
