The hike begins from Paradise, a perfectly named destination on the southern slope of Mount Rainier. Loop up to Panorama Point, a stunning viewpoint that is about as close to the summit of Rainier as you can get without an ice ax. The trail passes snowfields, streams, waterfalls, and fields of alpine flowers. On a clear day, the views along this loop are nothing short of incredible. The entire trail is 5.5 miles long with 1,625 feet of elevation gain. That distance can be trimmed to 4.5 miles by using the Golden Gate Trail shortcut. There are several trails exploring the Paradise area that connect to Skyline Trail allowing for a variety extensions.

Does it get any better than Paradise? Hike up Skyline Trail to find the answer – yes! The trail is paved for the first half mile, but don’t be dissuaded; it doesn’t last. There are several junctions along the way, but Skyline Trail is always well marked. Head straight through two junctions about 1/4 of a mile from the start. The steep trail then gains 200 feet over the next 1/4 mile to a junction with Dearhead Creek Trail. The enticing views of Mount Rainier and Nisqually Glacier on the early portions of this hike are just a taste of things to come.

Mount Rainier above Skyline Trail

Stay to the right through the junction with Dearhead Creek Trail, then make a left at the next junction with Alta Vista Trail, 0.6 miles from the start. Leave the pavement behind as you hike straight toward Mount Rainier. Cherish the next 1.25 miles, which climb 850 feet to Panorama Point. The trail climbs a rocky ridge overlooking Nisqually Glacier.

Nisqually Glacier and Mount Rainier

Stop and listen to the crackling sound of the moving ice. On a warm day, you may spot a waterfall flowing out of the glacier, down a cliff, and back into the glacier – all on the slopes of Mount Rainier. The staggering views continue as you turn up a switchback and climb to Panorama Point. The trail may cross several snowfields, which cover this wild landscape for much of the year.

Panorama Point doesn’t just have a big view, it has an enormous view, looking south over Paradise toward the Tatoosh Range. Beyond these sawtooth mountains are two of the other great volcanoes in the Cascade Mountains, Mount Adams and Mount Saint Helens.

The Tatoosh Range and Mount Adams

From Panorama Point, Lower Skyline Trail drops off a steep snow shelf on a potentially dangerous path that cuts close to half a mile off the hike. If the snow level is high and you aren’t wearing crampons, continue on Upper Skyline Trail, which gains an additional 300 feet, climbing further up the rocky slope toward Mount Rainier. Eventually, the trail turns downhill, and after just over 3/4 of a mile, reunites with the lower route.

Skyline Trail loops back down the mountain

Hike another half mile through a pristine mountain landscape covered with streams and wildflowers to a junction with Golden Gate Trail. Straight ahead, Skyline Trail descends another two miles to Myrtle Falls, passing Sluiskin Falls along the way. To the right, Golden Gate Trail is more direct, descending just a mile to a reunion with Skyline Trail at Myrtle Falls. There is no bad trail through Paradise. Just decide how much time you have and make your way down to the falls.

Skyline Trail crosses a footbridge above Myrtle Falls to reach a spur trail that descends to a closer look at the waterfall. Myrtle Falls is a postcard waiting to happen, a beautiful silken waterfall flowing from the snowfields on Mount Rainier – simply stunning.

Myrtle Falls

The pavement resume at Myrtle Falls, which means the great hike is coming to an end. It is less than half a mile back to the trailhead next to the Paradise Inn. Skyline Trail could easily be called Mount Rainier’s must-do hike. It is an incredible journey through a rugged and beautiful world. There is a national park entrance fee to reach Paradise, but no permit is required to hike Skyline Trail.

To get to the trailhead: From the the west, from the 5 Freeway in Tacoma, take exit 127 onto Route 512 east and drive 2 miles to Route 7 South. Turn right and drive 65 miles, passing through the town of Ashford and into Mount Rainier National Park. Pass Narada Falls and turn left on Paradise Road, concluding the trip with two miles of switchbacks up the Paradise. From the east side of the park, take Route 123 to Stevens Canyon Road (near Ohanapecosh) and drive west for 19 miles to Paradise Road. Turn right and drive two miles of switchbacks up to the parking area at Paradise. The trail is located between the visitor center and the inn.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

Washington Sunrise Frozen Lake Sourdough Ridge trek" />

Mount Freemont houses the nearest fire lookout tower to Mount Rainier. On a clear day, the lookout promises some of the park’s best views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding Cascade Mountains. The 6-mile round trip hike from the Sunrise Lodge and Visitor Center to Mount Freemont Lookout is exceptionally scenic and fulfilling, with 800 feet of elevation gain.

Lupines in the field above Sunrise

Sunrise is already a famously picturesque destination in Mount Rainier National Park. Stray a short distance from the trailhead at 6,400 feet, and the views get even better. Embark north toward Sourdough Ridge Trail, making two quick lefts before progressing west along the spine of the ridge. Enjoy the view to the right (north) toward McNeeley Peak, a pyramid shaped mountain surrounded by a valley that is so perfectly V-shaped it looks fake. Rest on a bench along the trail and admire the surroundings.

McNeeley Peak from Sourdough Ridge Trail

After 1/3 of a mile hiking up the rocky ridge trail, bear left, leaving the ridge for a gradual descent into a hanging valley between Sourdough Ridge and the snow-covered slopes of the Burroughs Mountains beneath Mount Rainier. The trail wraps around Frozen Lake, a small body of water covered in show shelves that is used as a natural water source for inhabitants below. Follow the trail around the lake past a short spur trail to a scenic overlook that looks back over Sunrise.

At a 5-way junction just past Frozen Lake (don’t worry, it’s well marked), turn right toward Mount Freemont. There are no more junctions from here, just a 400 foot climb over 1.35 miles to the lookout.

Cross the valley above the lake and retake the ridge before continuing north on a gradual course across large jagged rocks on the steep western slope of Mount Freemont. Enjoy a grand view to the west toward Skyscraper Mountain, and don’t forget to look over your shoulder for a staggering view of Mount Rainier. The daunting frigid peak has more glaciers than any other mountain in the lower 48. It is some view!

Mount Freemont Fire Lookout

When you reach the lookout at 7,180 feet, 20 feet below the actual summit, you are greeted with a sweeping panorama to the north. No mountain in that direction is as tall as Mount Freemont for miles, making for a near endless views. March up the steps to a square-shaped observation deck and stroll around the lookout tower. Large glass windows allows you to peer in at the compact living quarters used when the station is occupied.

Mount Freemont Lookout is incredibly well placed, offering expansive views over the Cascade Mountains north of Mount Rainier. If you are hesitant to turn around, don’t be. On the hike back, you will be heading straight toward Mount Rainier. Could it get any better?

Hiking back on Mount Freemont Lookout Trail below Mount Rainier

There is an entrance fee to reach this trail in Mount Rainier National Park, but no permit is required to hike to Mount Freemont Lookout.

A map of Mount Freemont Trail courtesy of NPS

To get to the trailhead: Take Route 410 (Mather Memorial Parkway) to Sunrise Road, 3.5 miles north of the intersection with Route 123. Turn west on Sunrise Road and climb 15 miles of switchbacks to the Sunrise area parking lot at the end of the road. The trail leaves from the north side of the parking lot between the visitor center and the lodge.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

alt="Naches Peak Loop Trail Mount Rainier National Park hiking Washington wildflower hike" />

The bloom of wildflowers on Naches Peak Loop is the #1 draw to this trail. An extraordinary carpet of purple lupines and other colorful flowers appearing along this trail each summer. The fact that Naches Peak Loop stands out among other trails in Mount Rainier National Park, which has lots of great places to see wildflowers, tells you that this trail is something special. The 3.75-mile hike with 575 feet of gradual elevation gain passes more than just flowers. There are streams, subalpine lakes, and views of snow-capped Mount Rainier. Loop it up!

Make your way to the eastern boundary of Mount Rainier National Park and begin hiking along the banks of Tipsoo Lake, a crystal clear pool so alluring some hikers never make it up the trail. Naches Peak Loop is best attempted in a clockwise direction to avoid hiking with Mount Rainier over your shoulder. Take the single track north up the grassy slope to the left of the lake. Pass through a belt of trees to reach a crossing of Route 410 at Chinook Pass. The trailhead is at the lower end of a horseshoe bend in Route 410, and this crossing comes on the higher side.

Yakima Peak and Route 410 from Naches Peak Loop Trail

Across the road, join the Pacific Crest Trail heading east out of Mount Rainier National Park into Wenatchee National Forest and William O. Douglas Wilderness. Streams pour over the trail throughout the next mile as you cross a mountainside with loads and loads of bright flowers like western columbine, indian paintbrush, subalpine daisies, pasqueflower and the almost omnipresent broadleaf lupine.

Wildflowers below Naches Peak

Beyond a pond bordered by boulders and pines, the trail progresses southward, climbing around Naches Peak for a view of Dewey Lake, cradled in an evergreen valley to the east. The loop swings west and reenters the national park as Mount Rainier appears. The snow-topped volcano hovers on the horizon for the rest of the loop. Look at the mountain or look at the flowers, it’s your choice over the final 1.75 miles. Descend back to Tipsoo Lake, cross Route 410, and walk down the lakeside path to return to the trailhead.

Naches Peak Loop Trail below Mount Rainier

There are picnic tables and bathrooms at the trailhead. Wildflower picking is prohibited. An entrance fee may be charged to access Naches Peak Loop in Mount Rainier National Park, but no permit is required to hike the trail.

To get to the trailhead: Take Route 410 (Mather Memorial Parkway) to the picnic area on the north side of the road half a mile southwest of Chinook Pass. From Sunrise, drive 15 miles down the mountain on Sunrise Road, turn south on Route 140 and drive 3.5 miles to the junction with Route 123 at Cayuse Pass. The intersection is 11 miles north of Stevens Canyon Road for those coming from Paradise or Ohanapecosh. From the intersection with Route 123, Continue east for 2.9 miles on Route 410 to the Tipsoo Lake Picnic Area on the left.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

alt="Silver Falls Trail Mount Rainier National Park hike Washington hike Ohanapecosh campground" />

If you are itching to hike through a forest that is a postcard of the northwest, Silver Falls Loop Trail is for you. To make things even better, the 3-mile circuit (with 300 feet of elevation gain) also visits a thundering 70-foot waterfall on Ohanapecosh River. This is a premier woodland hike in the southeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park.

Depart from Ohanapecosh Visitor Center up Hot Springs Nature Trail, where you will learn to identify several common plants in the forest. The trail weaves its way past a small spring, where a shallow runoff of sulfur-scented water streams along the trail.

Hot Springs Nature Trail

Turn right at the end of the trail and continue another 1.3 miles toward Silver Falls. The trail passes through a forest of Douglas firs, red cedars, and western hemlock above a lush understory of moss, maidenhair ferns, and Oregon grapes. Just past a footbridge over Laughingwater Creek, the trail maneuvers to the right bank of Ohanapecosh River, high above the water. Turn left at a junction with Laughingwater Creek Trail and drop down to Silver Falls, 1.6 miles from the start.

Oregon Grapes along the trail

A wooden bridge crosses the gorge just below the gushing waterfalls. Cross the planks, admiring the teal blue water and orange rocks below the bridge. The trail angles up to the right and climbs to an overlook near the brink of the falls. This is the most intimate prospective of Silver Falls.

Silver Falls

From here you would expect to turn downhill along the bank of the river. Instead the trail leaves the water and continues to climb. Can a trail be uphill both ways? This loop comes close, providing a gradual uphill grade for about 80% of the hike. That’s about the only “downside” of this shaded hike through an old-growth forest. If the 600 year old trees along the loop fail to impress you, you can take a side trip to the Grove of the Patriarchs, adding two miles to the hike. Some of the trees on this sheltered island are a thousand years old.

Silver Falls Loop Trail

To continue on the loop, bear left at the junction with Grove of the Patriarchs Trail, which comes a short distance past Silver Falls. Make another left at a junction with Cowlitz Divide Trail. You will climb further up the side of the valley, passing through interesting moss-covered rock formations. Eventually the trail does turn downhill and drops rapidly to the campground. Turn left when you hit the road, cross a bridge over Ohanapecosh River, and walk up loop B to your vehicle at the trailhead. There is an entrance fee to access this trail in Mount Rainier National Park, but no permit is required to hike to Silver Falls.

Ohanapecosh Campground offers 188 sites in a lush wooded setting. Sites may be reserved for $12 to $15 per night. There are also two group sites for $40 per night (as of September, 2011). The campground is open seasonally from May to October. Potable water and flush toilets are available (and there is a spigot near the trailhead). The campground is situated at 1,900 feet, making it the lowest developed campgrounds in Mount Rainier National Park. This elevation offers warmer nights that higher campgrounds, but don’t count on much sunlight during the day.

A map of Silver Falls Loop Trail courtesy of NPS

To get to the trailhead: The start of Silver Falls Loop Trail is located next to the Ohanapecosh visitor center in the southeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park (on Route 123, 1.75 miles south of the Stevens Canyon Entrance Station at the junction with Stevens Canyon Road). To reach the trailhead from the south, take Route 12 to Route 123 (7.5 miles east of Packwood), turn north and drive 3.5 miles to the Ohahapecosh Visitor Center and Campground on the left. Turn off Route 123 and drive into the campground. Pass the visitor center and make the first right into the B loop of the campground. Leave your vehicle in the day use parking area to the right. Walk past the “tree cookie” to the start of Hot Springs Nature Trail. You may stop by the visitor center to pick up a trail map and park guide before setting out.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

The closest trail to the south entrance of Zion Nation Park, and one of the best introductions to Zion, is Watchman Trail. This 3.5-mile lollipop loop climbs 500 feet to a rocky bench on the east side of Zion Canyon. The destination serves up stunning views of a nearby tower named The Watchman and several standout rock formations on the walls of Zion Canyon.

From the Zion National Park Visitor Center, the mesmerizing hike begins with a level walk along the east bank of the Virgin River. To the right, above an overflow parking area, there is already a view of The Watchman, a jagged spire topping out 2,500 feet overhead. Thankfully, this trail does not ascend all the way to the summit of The Watchman, which would require merciless mountain climbing. Instead, the trail gradually reaches a landing on the side of the canyon beneath the towering prominence.

The Watchman from the start of the trail

After a quarter-mile river bank stroll, the trail bends to the right, crosses a paved service road, and leaves the canyon floor. A short series of steps on the other side of the road prepare your legs for the 500-foot ascent to come. Progress across a desert landscape with motivating view up Zion Canyon toward a bowl shaped side-canyon.

Looking up Zion Canyon

Just over half a mile from the start, the trail launches into switchbacks built into the north side of the side canyon. After 0.6 miles of climbing, the trail crosses the back of the canyon over two small streams and continues south to the split for the loop.

The trail up to the loop below The Watchman

The half-mile circuit at the end of Watchman Trail is level and scenic. Spindled juniper clings to the rusty soil, leaving room for massive views. The right branch of the loop follows the canyon rim out to the westernmost point of the bench, where the best views up Zion Canyon can be found. The left side of the loop heads straight toward The Watchman, reaching the lip of a side canyon to the south before rounding toward the overlook.

There is a dramatic drop below Watchman Overlook and staggering views in every direction. To the southeast, is the orange pinnacle of The Watchman itself. Further south, beyond the park border, open Utah desert stretches toward the Vermilion Cliffs in Southern Arizona. To the west, on the sandstone wall across from the bench, there is a stunning stretch of Zion Canyon that includes The Alter of Sacrifice (recognizable for the deep red stain on the stone).

Morning light reaches The Watchman

After soaking up the views along the loop, hike the mile and a half back down the trail. Sunrise is an excellent time to explore Watchman Trail, when the transfer from shadow to sunlight is dramaticaly displayed along the walls of Zion Canyon. The trailhead is a short walk from both Watchman Campground and South Campground. If you are bedding down inside the park, Watchman Trail is an excellent way to start your day.

To get to the trailhead: From the park visitor center at the south entrance of the park near the city of Springdale, walk northwest past the shuttle stop to the bank of the Virgin River. Take the walkway to the north side of the road to the start of Watchman Trail.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Zion National Park in a larger map
Or view Utah Hikes in a larger map

<!--

Rarely is a mile-long hike as action packed and rewarding as Canyon Overlook Trail. The overlook sits on the rim of Pine Creek Canyon, which adjoins Zion Canyon to provide massive views of thousand-foot tall sandstone bluffs. There are ravines and overhangs along the short trail that will keep you entertained along the way. This excellent hike is appealing to all, especially those with limited time in Zion National Park.

The hike begins from a small larking area on Route 9 (Zion-Mount Carmel Highway) just east of the Mount Carmel Tunnel. Pick up the trail on the north side of the road and begin up a few short switchbacks, gaining a third of the 150 feet of elevation gain between the trailhead and the overlook.

Looking down on the Pine Creek Narrows

Progress along a ledge that looks out over a dark snaking ravine, the Pine Creek Narrows. Those with a fear of heights will cling to the metal railing leading to a short plank bridge. Walk the plank and continue on the trail beneath a large sandstone overhang. This shady spot offers an excellent view of Mount Carmel and its colorful arch shaped midsection. This impressive anticline offers a window into the geological forces that shaped Zion. Continue along the trail past juniper and boulders to the overlook itself, just half a mile from the trailhead.

Canyon Overlook

On the drive up Zion-Mount Carmel Highway from Zion Canyon, you probably notice an arch-shaped overhang on the orange east wall of Pine Creek Canyon. Canyon Overlook stands directly above this formation, known as The Great Arch. The short but wide Pine Creek Canyon spreads west toward Zion Canyon. From the viewpoint above the arch, you will find a broad unimpeded view to the west over Zion Canyon toward the Towers of the Virgin. To the north (right) is a 7,709-foot summit known as the East Temple, which towers over Pine Creek Canyon. To the northwest, on the opposite side of Zion Canyon, is The Sentinel stretches skyward to 7,157 feet. This impressive spire is also visible from Court of the Patriarchs, at the end of the shortest “trail” in the park.

At sunrise, you can watch the light first illuminate the orange walls of Zion Canyon. At the end of the day, you can see the sun disappear over Zion. Both are excellent times to visit Canyon Overlook Trail. The view is sure to impress at any hour of the day; this short hike really delivers.

Watching the sun set over Zion Canyon

To get to the trailhead: From the park visitor center, drive 1.5 miles north on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (Route 9) to Canyon Junction and turn right on Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (Route 9) and continue another 4.5 miles. Take a series of switchbacks up to the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Drive through the tunnel. On the other side, make an immediate right into a small parking lot. Walk across the road and begin hiking.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Zion National Park in a larger map
Or view Utah Hikes in a larger map

<!--

src="http://www.hikespeak.com/img/Utah/Zion/Riverside_Walk/Riverside_Walk_Zion_National_Park.jpg" alt="Riverside Walk Zion National Park trail river narrows hike" />

Riverside Walk accesses the notorious narrows north of Zion Canyon, making it one of the most popular trails in Zion National Park. To the end of the trail (at the start of the narrows) and back is a 2.8-mile hike over a level walkway bordering the Virgin River. Those looking to escape the Utah summer heat can leave the trail at any of several river access points to take a refreshing swim.

Riverside Walk begins from the Temple of Sinawava, where 3,000-foot rock walls form an amphitheater at the north end of Zion Canyon. The wheelchair friendly paved trail gains just sixty vertical feet as it follows the east bank of the Virgin River. Enjoy views of the passing water (and reflected orange sandstone walls) on the way to a small pool on the right, approximately ¾ of a mile from the start. Maidenhair ferns form a hanging garden on the rock face, resembling a miniature Emerald Pools.

A pool along the trail

Beyond the pool, march up a short rise and continue up the narrowing canyon. The ingress squeezes between sheer rock walls and elegant bends in the river.

Most who hike Riverside Walk do not stop at the end of the trail, and press on through water than can be waist to chest deep. By trail’s end, the canyon is just a hundred feet wide. Those who venture further upstream can see that it become narrower still. The gap between the thousand foot tall canyon walls shrinks to just twenty feet.

If you are continuing another two miles to Orderville Canyon, or trekking deeper into the narrows, be prepared for river hiking in potentially dangerous conditions. Flash flooding does occur. Those serious about hiking the narrows may prefer the 17.5-mile one-way descent through the narrows from Chamberlain’s Ranch to the Temple of Sinawava (at the start of the Riverside Walk), an epic backpacking excursion.

After exploring as much of the narrows as you wish, return down the Riverside Walk. This trail is easy, with nice scenery and crowds. An fee is required to enter Zion National Park, but the park shuttle to the trailhead is free. No permit is required to hike Riverside Walk, but a wilderness permit must be obtained to backpack through the narrows.

The Virgin River along Riverside Walk

To get to the trailhead: Between May and October, access to Zion Canyon is restricted to shuttle traffic only. From the Zion National Park Visitor Center, take the park shuttle to the final stop at the northernmost end of Zion Canyon, Temple of Sinawava.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Zion National Park in a larger map
Or view Utah Hikes in a larger map

<!--

Reservoir hike Wapama Falls Rancharia Tueeulala Waterfall Kolana Rock Yosemite National Park Trail" />

In the northwest corner of Yosemite National Park there is a valley that John Muir described as “a wonderfully exact counterpart of the great Yosemite.“ Since Muir’s time, Hetch Hetchy Valley has changed. It was dammed in 1923 and a large blue reservoir now covers the valley. Muir opposed the dam, and fellow conservationists lost a long battle to preserve the valley. There is a continued effort to return the valley to its natural state by removing the dam. Residents of San Francisco and outlying areas use water held in Hetch Hetchy Valley. It is argued today, as it was a century ago, that a dam placed further downstream could deliver the water more efficiently while preserving the beautiful valley. Even in its altered state, Hetch Hetchy Valley is beautiful. The trail around the reservoir provides impressive views of up to three waterfalls. To the powerful Wapama Falls and back is a 5-mile day hike with 200 feet of elevation gain. Beyond, the trail continues deeper into the Yosemite Wilderness and is a great route for backpackers. Hetch Hetchy Valley receives far fewer visitors than its more popular neighbor, and this picturesque mostly level trail is a great way to explore an enjoyable pocket of Yosemite National Park.

Begin by hiking across O’Shaughnessy Dam. Off the dam to the left, water spills into the Touloumne River. To the right lies eight miles of protected waters, the largest body in Yosemite National Park. Boating and swimming is not permitted, reserving the pristine reservoir for hikers. Pass through a tunnel on the far side of the dam and continue along the northwest side of the lake. Cross Tueeulala Falls, which cascades down the granite slope to the left. This falls is less impressive than the one to come, so continue up the trail, gaining minimal elevation to a scenic rise along the lake. From the high point of the hike, there is a superb view up and down the lake including the dynamic summit of Kolana Rock, which rises up from the opposite side of the big blue body.

Looking up Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

Proceed along the gradual rocky trail to wooden footbridges that cross the spillway below Wapama Falls. The waterfall is over one thousand feet tall, separated into segmented drops and cascades. Before the dam was built, Wapama Falls fell hundreds of feet further to the bottom of Hetch Hetchy Valley, but the truncated tumbler is still impressive. Dart across the bridges, enjoying a refreshing mist from the powerful falls. Look for rainbows in the area where the falls meets the lake. The view from the bridge includes mountains, a waterfall, and a lake. What more could you want?

A footbridge beneath Wapama Falls

Energetic hikers may continue another four miles to Rancharia Falls or deeper into the Yosemite Wilderness and neighboring Stanislaus National Forest. Since swimming back is not an option, return the way your came.

To get to the trailhead: From the west entrance of Yosemite National Park, continue another mile outside the park on Route 120 (Big Flats Road). Turn right (east) on Evergreen Road. Drive 7.5 miles on winding miles through forest and farms to Mather. Turn right on to Hetch Hetchy Road – Evergreen Road and continue another 7.5 miles to the parking area for Hetchy Hetchy Reservoir next to the dam.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

This 2.4-mile hike with 400 feet of elevation gain is a perfect outing for late summer and early fall when the road and trail are free of snow.

Stroll along a wide trail through a lovely pine forest. As you near the lake, gradually ascend a granite floor with sparser tree cover. When you arrive at the edge of the mountain-cradled May Lake, you’ll feel immediately at peace. Take a stroll along the waters edge, or dip your toes in. The calm of May Lake is irresistible. Across the reflective waters is Mount Hoffman, a broad 10,850-foot summit. There is a Sierra Club Trail Camp at the end of the trail for those lucky enough to spend a night at the lake. Swimming in May Lake is not permitted.

May Lake

The hike back is brisk, making May Lake a perfect sunset hike, especially for those staying at nearby campgrounds on Tioga Road. Even on busy holiday weekends when Yosemite Valley fills with visitors, there is solitude to be found on the short hike to May Lake. From the north side of the lake, a rugged footpath heads up Mount Hoffman, gaining 1,500 feet over two miles (along with sweeping Yosemite views). There is also be an ascent path from the south end of the lake near the Sierra Club Camp.

May Lake at dusk

To get to the trailhead: From Yosemite Valley, drive west on Route 140 for seven long windy miles. Turn right on route 120, Tioga Road, and proceed 26.5 miles to May Lake. Turn north on May Lake Road and drive 1.7 miles to the trailhead at road’s end. Both May Lake and Tioga Road close seasonally. From the east, May Lake Road is four miles past Tenaya Lake.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--
