A peaceful camping experience awaits at Cerro Alto Campground, located just off Route 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero in San Luis Obispo County. The year-round campground has 22 sites spread out along a mile-long road. The sites are private and perfect for tent camping. Campsites may be reserved online or in person for $18 per night. There are fire rings, charcoal grills, and picnic tables at each site, and pit toilets and potable water spigots located throughout the campground. Some sites are situated atop stone retaining walls along the side of the road, adding extra privacy. The campground is set in a partially shaded canyon carved by the East Fork of Morro Creek. Lush vegetation enhances the feeling of isolation at Cerro Alto Campground in the Santa Lucia Range District of Los Padres National Forest.

Sites alongside the trail to the summit of Cerro Alto

Raised campsites along the road

The campground sits at 1,000 feet above sea level at the base of the 2,624-foot Cerro Alto, one of the highest points in San Luis Obispo County. width="648" height="162" />

The 2,624-foot summit of Cerro Alto is one of the highest points in San Luis Obispo County and delivers a panoramic view. It seems like you can see the entire county from the top of the commanding peak, including each of the volcanic peaks stretching between Morro Bay and Edna Valley, the Nine Sisters. There are a couple ways to the summit, each tackling 1,600 feet of elevation between the trailhead at Cerro Alto Campground and the cerro’s summit. The shortest route is a steep 1.95-mile ascent. A more gradual trail can be taken to a junction part way up the mountain for a 2.75-mile route that is recommended for the hike up. Additionally, there is a spur trail out to a ridge south of the summit that adds 0.65 scenic miles to the hike. These trails can all be combined for a 5.35-mile trek with high views over Los Padres National Forest, and the route following is not as complicated as it might sound.

Cerro Alto Campground is tucked away in an oak forest off Route 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero. There are two trails to the summit of Cerro Alto starting from a parking area at the end of the mile-long road through the campground. The gradual route begins near campsite 18 next to a large sign that reads, “Cerro Alto Trail 12E01.” The steeper route can be found a hundred yards back down the road on the left. Simply labeled “trail,” the single track drops across the East Fork of Morro Creek and begins a strenuous climb up the mountain. Unless you want to punish yourself, save this trail for the way down. For the hike up, pick the gradual trail starting next to that big national forest sign. The first half mile is surprisingly level, heading east alongside the creek. Ferns line the early part of this trail, shaded by a canopy of oaks. Eventually, the trail leaves the canyon and angles south up the mountain.

At a junction, 0.95 miles from the start, turn right following a wooden sign for the summit. Above the junction, you will quickly pass two paths breaking off to the left that form a brief detour that avoids a short steep section of the trail. Just over half a mile from the junction, the trail wraps around the north side of the mountain for a fine perspective over the canyon containing Cerro Alto Campground. Frog Pond Peak rises to the northeast, flanked by green ridges and canyon. There is a bench here to assist in admiring the view.

Looking northeast from the trail

The trail turns west leveling out just long enough for you to catch your breath before the real ascent. At a four-way junction, 1.7 miles and 650 vertical feet from the start, turn left following the wooden sign for the summit. The more direct route up from the campground is to the right, directly across from the summit trail. Straight ahead, an AT&T Cable Road continues over the range toward West Cuesta Ridge Road.

The Summit Trail can no longer afford to be gradual. Climb straight up the chaparral-covered mountainside, picking up 400 feet in the next half mile up to an unmarked junction. The split comes shortly after the trail presents its first western view over Morro Bay. Both trails leaving the junction reunite at a saddle beneath the summit, but it is advisable to take the shorter route to the left. The alternative route, which continues straight ahead is 0.2 miles longer, but no less steep, adding a few extra views over Morro Bay. To hike this way, go straight past a bench and turn left up Lookout Trail, which switchbacks around the southwest side of a rise west the summit to reach the saddle. The trail departing to the left from the junction, is the shorter route, heading up a draw between Cerro Alto and the rise to the west. You get a good view of the summit heading this way, as well as a view north over the range toward Rusty Peak. This is the steepest stretch of the hike, gaining about 375 feet in a third of a mile.

When you reach the saddle, turn left and follow the trail around the north face of Cerro Alto, curling all the way to the east side before reaching the rocky summit. With the exception of the radio-towered summit of Tassajara Peak to the southeast, there is nothing as tall as Cerro Alto in sight, making the views immensely panoramic. The entire string of Morros running across San Luis Obispo County is visible to the south, starting with Morro Rock in Morro Bay and ending with Islay Hill in Edna Valley. If you have hiked Cerro Cabrillo, Bishop Peak, or Cerro San Luis, you should have no trouble recognizing these volcanic peaks. From the ocean in the west to the Santa Lucia Mountains in the east, the view is as expansive as you could imagine. Turn around and look in the other direction to see even more – verdant mountains and valley rolling out to the north, bordered by a rugged coastline extending through Cambria and San Simeon. This is a lofty reward earned by a strenuous effort.

Hiking around the summit of Cerro Alto

Before you hike all the way back down, there is another view to enjoy. Return to the T-junction at the saddle and walk straight a few steps to a path breaking off to the left (this makes the T-junction more like a t-junction). Follow this rugged Ridge Trail, which quickly mounts the rocky ridge south of Cerro Alto. Why bother hiking out on this ridge, which is less than 100 feet shorter than Cerro Alto? Because the ridge is out of the view. Unlike on the summit, there is no prominent formation to the south to shrink the view. The south face of the ridge drops straight down to Chorro Valley to provide a grander perspective of the Nine Sisters, Irish Hills, Morro Bay, and other icons of San Luis Obispo County.

Looking south from the ridge trail

Follow the path southeast across the spine of the ridge covered in jagged boulders. The terrain is so different from the surrounding tamer mountains that you might think you were transplanted to Pinnacles National Monument. After a third of a mile, you will reach the high point of the ridge, which is a great spot to turn around after taking in the unimpeded view. The ridge presents a different experience from the rest of the hike and is a worthwhile addition.

Hiking the rocky ridge south of Cerro Alto

Back at the saddle, return down the mountain to the four-way junction. Cross the AT&T Cable Road and follow the sign for the short trail to the campground. Dropping 650 feet in less than a mile, the trail quickly descends the mountainside of chaparral to enter an oak woodland. Cross a wooden bridge over Morro Creek to reach the paved road a hundred yards from the original trailhead.

Hiking down the trail to the campground

A national forest adventure pass is required to park at the trailhead. You may self-register for a day use pass at the trailhead for a cost of $8. One of the fine sites at Cerro Alto Campground may be reserved for $18 per night. Dogs are permitted on leash. Mountain bikes are also allowed. No permit is required for the rewarding hike to Cerro Alto, so get out and enjoy!

To get to the trailhead: From Morro Bay, 13 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo on Highway One, take Route 41 northeast for 7.2 miles to the turnoff for Cerro Alto Campground on the right. From Atascadero, 16 miles north of San Luis Obispo on the 101 Freeway, take Route 41 southwest for 9 miles to the turnoff for the campground on the left. Proceed one mile through the elongated campground to the trailhead parking area at the end of the road.

Use the map below to create your own directions:
<!--

class="postbanner" src="http://www.hikespeak.com/img/LP/Knapps_Castle/Knapps_Castle_Hike.jpg" alt="Knapps Castle Trail Santa Barbara ruins Camino Cielo hike" />

In the mountains above Santa Barbara, there is a plot of privately owned land surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest. On that land stand the remains of a palatial estate that burned down seventy years ago, the so-called Knapp’s Castle. To the ruins and back is a 0.8-mile round trip hike with 50 feet of elevation change. The majestic views from this unique spot far exceed the effort.

From East Camino Cielo at an elevation of 2,900 feet, take an unmarked dirt road down the north side of the mountain. After a quarter mile, as Knapp’s Castle comes into view, turn right, passing through a gate to reach the ruins.

The ruins of Knapp’s Castle

Stride down the imperial landing overlooking the Santa Ynez River Canyon, Lake Cachuma, and the opposing peaks of the San Rafael Mountains. Explore the enduring remains of Knapp’s Castle, which include stone steps, archways, and fireplaces. Several pieces still stand from the impressive home built in 1916 for George Knapp, a former chairman for Union Carbide.

Look northwest through a trio of stone arches toward Lake Cachuma, a reservoir that did not exist when Knapp’s Castle was built or burned. While the view has certainly changed, this is still a breathtaking place to build a home or take a hike. When you have finished checking out the ruins, return the way you came.

Looking out through the archways

As of June 2011, there is a construction notice at the trailhead. This has alarmed the local hiking community, which has enjoyed longstanding access to the privately owned ruins. According to the Santa Barbara Independent, the Santa Barbara County Planning Department issued a “stop work” order on any construction at Knapp’s Castle at the beginning of 2011. Based on the newly posted notice, it seems that changes to the ruins may be coming. Take a hike to Knapp’s Castle before that happens. No permit is required to visit the ruins other than a national forest adventure pass, which you must display on your vehicle to park at the trailhead.

To get to the trailhead: From the 101 Freeway in Santa Barbara, take Route 154 north for ten miles. At the top of the mountain, turn right on East Camino Cielo and drive three miles east to a small pullout on the right opposite the gated dirt road on the left (the start of the trail). The trailhead is located one mile past Painted Cave Road on a C-shaped bend in East Camino Cielo.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Central Coast Hikes in a larger map

<!--

The 2,458-foot peak is just two miles from the Pacific Ocean, putting it in prime position to offer eye-popping views. There are two routes to the summit from the trailhead in Gaviota State Park. The traditional Gaviota Peak Trail is 3.15 miles one-way, while the immensely scenic Trespass Trail is 3.35 miles one-way, creating a superb 6.5-mile loop with 2,150 feet of elevation gain.

From the trailhead cul-de-sac just off the 101 Freeway in Gaviota State Park, begin hiking up the wide fire road toward Gaviota Peak. The road climbs 150 feet over the first quarter mile to a junction with Trespass Trail. From here you may head left or right to reach the peak. Trespass Trail is a narrow singe-track with stunning ocean views, while Gaviota Peak Trail offers underwhelming (though not un-enjoyable) inland views from a broad fire road. If you could only hike one trail, Trespass Trail would be the way to go. Since you can visit Gaviota Peak as a loop, hike up on the fire road and then come down on Trespass Trail, enjoying the views looking out from the mountain.

Gaviota Peak Trail

Turn left up the fire road toward Gaviota Peak and Gaviota Hot Springs. After a short distance, the road crosses a creek and comes to a junction with a single-track on the right that heads up to the hot springs, reaching it after 0.1 miles. The milky blue pool attracts bathers who relish a dip in the naturally warm sulfur spring waters.

Gaviota Peak Trail continues past the junction, actually losing elevation for perhaps the only time on the trail, swinging out across a grass field before aiming up the mountain again. The road finds shade and passes through a metal gate, 0.9 miles from the start. Continue up Gaviota Peak Trail, which passes in and out of shade as it unrelentingly picks up elevation. After ascending a thousand feet over the first 1.6 miles, the trail enters Los Padres National Forest.

A sliver of the Pacific Ocean comes into view to the west beyond the hills of Lompoc as the road continues to climb, putting on another thousand feet over the next 1.4 miles, coming to a T at the saddle northeast of Gaviota Peak. The junction greets hikers with a grand view down the other side of the ridge over a stunning stretch of coastline spanning east toward Santa Barbara. This should propel you on to the panoramic views at the summit. Turn right and finish the ascent, tackling the final 0.17 miles to the top of Gaviota Peak.

Looking east toward Santa Barbara

Gaviota Peak offers breathtaking views up and down the coast. You can look east clear across Santa Barbara, and west across Lompoc toward Point Conception. In between is vast sea adorned by Channel Islands that hover on the horizon. To the north, gentle rolling hills frame the fertile Santa Ynez Valley. And the view to the east, across the Santa Ynez Mountains, that’s pretty good too… Indeed, the 2,458-foot Gaviota Peak rises mightily over a beautiful region of California.

Looking northwest from Gaviota Peak

Those descending on Trespass Trail will find it completely different from the ascent. Trespass Trail is narrow, overgrown, and unmaintained. Definitely wear long pants if you trek this way or your legs will get scraped! Pick up the single-track heading southwest off the summit and prepare for sensational views. The landscape surrounding this trail is so pristine and wild, it is hard to believe you are just a couple miles from a major freeway.

Trespass Trail

Wildfire-scorched trees on the upper slopes are surrounded by thriving underbrush. Orange boulders dot the mountainside that rises high above the blue waters of the Pacific. The trail might not be easy going, but the views are worth it. After 1/3 of a mile, the trail reaches a grassy slope. The scenery remain tremendous as the narrow track descends another 2/3 of a mile to the bottom of a ravine, at an elevation of 1,400 feet. The trail turns to the right, heading west for 0.7 miles to a gate across the trail.

Why the gate? The land on this side of the fence is owned by ranchers who purchased the property with a built-in agreement that the public be granted continued access to the trail, hence the name Trespass Trail because you are a welcome trespasser. Pass through the gate, re-latching it as you go, and return to Gaviota State Park. The rough dirt path dissects a few more patches of high brush over the next half mile before coming clear and widening to a jeep trail that allows brisker hiking across a grassy slope.

Descending out of the canyon

Look down on the 101 Freeway, literally of course, as you hike the final mile of Trespass Trail, wrapping around the base of Gaviota Peak back to the junction near the start of the hike. If your body needs a soak, turn right to hike up to the hot springs. Otherwise, turn left and descend a quarter mile to the trailhead, completing this 6.5-mile loop with 2,150 feet of elevation.

Great exercise and unbelievable views make this a must-do hike on California’s central coast. Be sure to wear long pants, at least for Trespass Trail, or the incredible track will be less of a joy. There is a $2 fee to park and the trailhead. Bring exact change, because this is a self-fee area. If that price is too steep for you, of if you are just looking for a nearby trails that is less steep, check out Nojoqui Falls and the Gaviota Wind Caves.

To get to the trailhead: From Santa Barbara, drive 30 miles west on the 101 Freeway. When the freeway turns inland, pass the Gaviota Rest Area and drive 1.5 miles to next exit labeled California One (Lompoc / Vandenberg AFB). At the top of the ramp, turn right and make another immediate right on the unnamed Gaviota Park Boundary Road. Continue 1/3 of a mile to the cul-de-sac at road’s end.

From Buellton to the north, take the 101 South for 8 miles to the exit for California One. Turn left across the freeway and make a right on the frontage road to the trailhead.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Gaviota Peak GPS in a larger map
Or view Central Coast Hikes in a larger map

<!--

This 3.7-mile hike combines four trails (San Ysidro Canyon Trail, McMenemy Trail, Girard Trail, and Edison Catway Fire Road) to form a loop through the mountains behind Montecito, California. The trails ascend nearly 1,000 feet providing good exercise and good views.

From San Ysidro Trailhead, begin hiking inland on the wide trail that passes through a neighborhood before reaching Los Padres National Forest. After 0.2 miles, the trail runs into a paved street. Turn left here and follow the trail along the road past a few homes. After entering the forest, you will come to a junction half a mile from the start. This is the beginning of the loop portion of the hike, which is best experienced in a clockwise direction, insuring a gradual ascent and a swift descent. Turn left, following a sign labeled McMenemy Lower – Trail.

Cross the creek and start up McMenemy Trail

Follow the single-track McMenemy Trail across San Ysidro Creek and through a forest of Eucalyptus trees. The trail passes through the forest and climbs a grassy mountainside. ascending 450 feet over 0.9 miles. After several switchbacks, you will arrive at a junction with Girard Trail alongside a stone hitching post and a grand stone bench. This bench is dedicated to Colonel McMenemy and offers a fine view over Montecito and the Pacific Ocean. One could turn around right here for a satisfying 2.8-mile out and back with 650 feet of elevation gain.

McMenemy Trail

Looking up Girard Trail from McMenemy Bench and hitching post

Beyond the bench, McMenemy Trail continues to the west toward Hot Springs Canyon. However, to continue with the loop, make a right on Girard Trail, which heads further into the mountains, wrapping around the upper slopes of San Ysidro Canyon. You will ascend another 340 feet over 0.55 miles to reach Edison Catway, a fire road that descends to San Ysidro Canyon Trail. Just 1/8 of a mile into Girard Trail, there is a short spur path to a picturesque overlook on the side of the canyon.

Formations off Girard Trail overlooking San Ysidro Canyon

Girard Trail ends below a string of high power electric lines, reaching a highpoint of 1,400 feet. Make another right on the dirt road and begin the steep descent back into the canyon. It is 1.2 miles from here to the junction with McMenemy Trail. When you reach the bottom of the canyon, turn right and take San Ysidro Canyon Trail back to the trailhead. No fee or permit requires to hike this 3.7-mile loop, so get out and enjoy.

Descending Edison Catway

To get to the trailhead: From Los Angeles, take the 101 North for 90 mile. When you reach Montecito (just east of Santa Barbara), take exit 92 onto Sheffield Drive. Head north on Sheffield drive for 1.3 miles. Turn left on East Valley road. After one mile turn right on Park Lane. After 0.4 miles turn left onto E. Mountain Drive. Take that for a quarter mile to the trailhead at road’s end. There is parking on the side of the road.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View McMenemy Trail GPS in a larger map
Or view Central Coast Hikes in a larger map

<!--

Tequepis Trail begins near the shores of Lake Cachuma and ascends the north side of the Santa Ynez Mountains behind Santa Barbara. The trail up offers views of the lake and valley, and there are broader ocean views from the top. This is an invigorating 8.4-mile round trip hike with 2,300 feet of elevation gain.

To reach Tequepis Trail, start at the free parking lot at the entrance of Circle V Camp. Follow the dirt road straight through the camp past a swimming pool and bunkhouses. After 0.2 miles, step over Tequepis Creek and pass through a large metal gate. This is the boundary of the Los Padres National Forest and the start of Tequepis Trail.

The trail up Tequepis Canyon

Continue south on the wide gravel road through two early junctions. A tenth of a mile past the gate, go straight, or slightly to the right, past an unmarked road. Then 0.2 miles later, follow the sign to the left at a second intersection. Don’t worry. Beyond this point, there are no more junction to worry about until you reach the top.

Abundant shade covers the trail as you ascend gradually uphill along the bank of a seasonal toward the back of Tequepis Canyon. The trail dwindles from a service road to a single track. After 1.1 miles, you will reach a sign at a sharp left turn in the trail. This is the start of the switchbacks, three miles and 1,750 vertical feet below the top of the trail.

Tequepis Trail

Less than half a mile past the sign, the trail leaves the shade of the forest for sun-exposed chaparral covered slopes. Climb a steep bit of trail (the steepest of the hike) before returning to more gradual terrain. The climb continues in earnest, with a couple more steep sections breaking up the steady grade. The ascent is relentless, but the views only improve as you climb. The missing shade is replaced by sweeping sights of Lake Cachuma and the surrounding area. The lush slopes make Tequepis Trail a hummingbird haven. Unfortunately, the trail is also home to enormous, almost bird-sized, mosquitoes. Persevere past these pests up the long series of switchbacks. This nonstop climb to the top in a fulfilling exercise of endurance.

Looking down on Lake Cachuma

Just below the top of the trail, you will pass through a mixed forest of tall trees and ferns. As you crest the ridge of the mountain, the vegetation gives way to a grassy clearing with oceanic views. The moment the trail stops climbing, it shrinks and becomes hard to follow. A faint path to the left crosses through the grasses down to Camino Cielo, a scenic fire road along the top of the range. If you intend to turn around at the top of the trail, you don’t have to worry about this path. Simply walk across the grass to the south and lose yourself in the view of Santa Barbara and the ocean beyond. On a typical day the Channel Islands can be seen on the horizon.

Looking east down the range from the top of Tequepis Trail

After a 4.1-miles climb with 2,300 feet of elevation gain, it would be nice to stand at a summit, but Tequepis Trail ends at a saddle east of Broadcast Peak. Though the mountaintop looks deceptively near, there is no direct path up the radio-towered peak, making it a 1.5-mile add-on, with an additional 500 vertical feet. To summit Broadcast Peak, follow Camino Cielo to the west. On the far side of the summit, make the first right up a service road to the 4,000-foot summit. To the west, Camino Cielo continues to Santa Ynez Peak and further down the range.

Looking west on Camino Cielo below Broadcast Peak

A circle around the installations at the summit offers views in every direction. While this extension provides grander views than the top of Tequepis Trail, it expands the hike to 11.5 miles — quite a lot for a day hike. If you are interested in experiencing westerly views without all the hiking, consider Lizard’s Mouth, a short trail just of Camino Cielo with almost no elevation gain.

A view of the Santa Barbara coast from the top of Tequepis Trail

Whether you extend the hike or not, once you turn around, it is all downhill! The track that took two hours to climb, will now take just an hour and a half to descend. This still gives you plenty of time to enjoy the fine views of the reservoir below and the San Rafael Mountains to the north. There is no fee or permit to hike Tequepis Trail, so get out and enjoy.

Enjoy the hike back down

To get to the trailhead: From Santa Barbara, take the 154 north toward Lake Cachuma. Continue 7.7 miles past Cold Springs Arch Bridge and turn left at the sign for Circle V Ranch. This is the second turnoff with a sign for Camp Allegre. If you reach the entrance for Lake Cachuma Recreation Area, you have gone half a mile to far. From the turnoff, take the road to the left and drive 1.3 miles to the parking lot at the end of the road outside Circle V Camp – Saint Vincent de Paul Camp.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Tequepis Trail GPS in a larger map
Or view Central Coast Hikes in a larger map

<!--

/>

Salmon Creek Trail is a popular track with backpackers venturing deep into the Silver Peak Wilderness in the Monterey District of Los Padres National Forest, but you only need to hike 0.3 miles from Highway One to see a beautiful 120-foot waterfall. Unlike the trail overlooking beautiful McWay Falls further up the Big Sur Coast, this hike brings you up close and person with a powerful cascade pouring down the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Park at the trailhead on a big horseshoe bend in Highway One, just south of Salmon Creek Ranger Station. Look for the mileage sign on the east side of the highway, and start hiking up the trail south of the creek. You can basically follow you ears the entire way to the falls. At 0.2 miles, break from the trail through a garden of boulders toward the creek. The surrounding Bays add a soothing fragrance to this shaded glen.

Boulders below the falls

Cross a couple of small grottos and approach the waterfall. Two branches of water unite as they drop 120 feet and crash into the pool below, giving rise to a spray of mist. There is a boulder blocking easy access to the base of the falls. To obtain the unobstructed view on the other side, employ the assistance of a rope that hangs down the rock. Hoist yourself a couple feet and cross the rock.

Salmon Creek Falls

Even if you aren’t up for this quick bit of climbing, the waterfall is quite impressive from the rocks just downstream. When you have taken it all in, make your way back through the boulders and down the trail to Highway One (assuming you aren’t hiking further up Salmon Creek Trail). No fee or permit is required, so get out and enjoy.

Standing below Salmon Creek Falls

To get to the trailhead: Salmon Creek Trail is located on a large horseshoe bend in Highway One, 3.7 miles north of Ragged Point Inn (or 26 miles north of Cambria). Visited together, they form a 1.5-mile hike.

There are two trailheads for this hike, both are unmarked a somewhat difficult to spot. From Plaskett Creek Campground drive a quarter mile south and scan the west side of the road for the Plaskett Rock Point trailhead. A second trail, another quarter mile to the south, leads straight to Jade Cove. A scenic path along the coastal bluff connects these parallel tracks.

Walking along the bluff

The upper trail splits not far from the road. The main track continues to Plaskett Rock Point, while a smaller path breaks off to the left and cuts across the grassland toward the top of Jade Cove, half a mile from the start. The lower trail, takes a direct line from Highway One, intersects the bluff trail, and descends the steep 0.1 mile path to Jade Cove.

The cove does not yield much in the way of views, and is more popular with rock enthusiasts pursuing the jade found along the coast (which is why you will see “excavating prohibited” signs in this area).

The trail down to Jade Cove

The trail above the cove meanders north along the bluff through coastal grasses spotted with wildflowers. Below barking elephant seals can be heard over the sound of waves crashing on the rocky shore. Halfway to the end of Plaskett Rock Point, the trail becomes overgrown and less easy going, so you may turn around before reaching the end.

Plaskett Rock just off the coast

Excluding the steep track down to the cove (which requires the use of a rope at the bottom) the hike on the bluffs over Jade Cove is soft and level. Park at either trailhead and explore the area. This is a good family hike for those staying at the nearby Plaskett Creek Campground. Just north of Plaskett Rock Point is Sand Dollar Beach which can be reached via a short trail that starts just north of the campground.

To get to the trailhead: From Ragged Point Inn, drive 15 miles north (or 35 miles from Cambria) and park on the west side of Highway One. formation overlooking Santa Barbara. Wind-carved pockets on the underside of this sandstone outcropping give the rock a resemblance to a frog or lizard’s mouth. The short hike to Lizard’s Mouth offers sensational views and is a quick excursion for anyone traveling the 154 between Santa Barbara and Lake Cachuma or Los Olivos.

A path from West Camino Cielo meanders through boulders and brush, heading slightly uphill to a clear spot overlooking Santa Barbara. Although there are a few overlapping paths, they all lead to the same place. Turn right and ascend the slope of sandstone that forms the lizard’s back. When the side of Lizard’s Mouth becomes visible, either climb over the rocks to get to it, or continue along the path as it swings around to the destination.

Lizard’s Mouth

An opening beneath the overhang makes for a good turnaround point. Climb up on the “lizard” and take in the panoramic views. The route back to the trailhead is the same and a bit easier to follow in reverse. Lizard’s mouth offers a half-mile stroll with optional rock scrambling and obligatory views of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. The trail runs adjacent to the Winchester Canyon Gun Club so be prepared to hear gunfire as you hike, especially on weekends. No fee or permit is required, so get out and enjoy.

Lizard’s Mouth

To get to the trailhead: From The 101 freeway west of downtown Santa Barbara, exit on the 154 headed north. The road climbs up the mountain into Los Padres National Forest. After 7 miles, turn left onto West Camino Cielo (if you reach the East Camino Cielo or the crest of the ridge, you have gone to far). Off the 154, West Camino Cielo makes an immediate right before winding up to the top of the ridge. Take this road for 3.5 miles and enjoy the views over Santa Barbara. The trailhead is on the left side of the road a few hundred feet before the Winchester Canyon Gun Club. When you reach the gun club or the point where the road becomes unpaved, turn around and backtrack to the roadside parking near the trailhead. A wooden board next to a tree (and a brown pipe on the ground) mark the start of the trail to Lizard’s Mouth.

Use the map below to create your own directions:

View Central Coast Hikes in a larger map

<!--

The 100-foot Tangerine Falls is widely considered the most beautiful in Santa Barbara, and it is absolutely spectacular during and following the rainy season. This 2.5-mile excursion has just about everything a hiker could want. The trail follows a picturesque creek, provides plenty of shade, has ocean views, and offers a bit of off-trail rock hopping and scrambling. Oh and there is a beautiful waterfall as well.

Due to the number of trails in the area, there are a few junctions along the way to Tangerine Falls that are important to pay attention to. The first junction comes ¼ of a mile from the trailhead and is the only one that is marked. Cross the creek just below a wooden bench, leaving the East Fork Trail for the West Fork Trail. Follow this trail for another ¾ of a mile as it climbs along the bank to the left of the creek. An opening in the canopy provides a view up canyon toward Tangerine Falls and a view down canyon toward the ocean. The trail descends closer to the creek, passing a white sign on the left, before coming to an unmarked junction. The West Fork Trail curves uphill to the left, but turn right here, descending to the creek on the unmaintained but well-worn Middle Fork Trail.

Middle Fork Trail

You are now just above the confluence of the West Fork and the Middle Fork of Cold Springs Creek. The waterfall is on the middle fork, so cross over the creek in front of you, using the strong roots to climb the opposing bank up to the Middle Fork Trail. After a short distance, comes another junction. The main trail turns to the left, but continue straight ahead on the path following the creek toward the falls. This track crosses the creek a few times, and there is a good footpath all the way to the base of the falls. There are also several offshoots that can lead to unnecessary rock hopping up the creek. If you find yourself in the position and are unhappy rock hopping, simply backtrack or cross to the other bank of the creek to find the trail again.

The trail to Tangerine Falls

There are several short cascades in the creek leading up to the falls. Next to one of them, the path crosses a steep rock face en route to more even footing. A bit of scrambling is required to reach the actual base of the falls, but it is all worth it.

In its full glory, Tangerine Falls is magnificent. The silky waters slide down a steep face of pink and brown sandstone. As if that weren’t enough, the waterfall also offers a great view down the canyon toward the Pacific. Relax and enjoy Tangerine Falls, or more formally, West Fork Cold Springs Falls, before returning the way your came. No fee or permit is required so get out and enjoy.

Tangerine Falls

<!--
